The Redondo Union High School (RUHS) Band and Dance Guard won the Division 4 California State Band Championship two Saturdays ago during a competition at Huntington Beach High School. Redondo also won the High Visual and General Effect awards.

The 90-member team performed “Music’s Simple Gifts” by Key Poulan, in three movements. The victory was Redondo’s first in four appearances at the South California Judges Association competition.

“This victory is a major accomplishment for our program. The staff and I are all very proud of the growth that the students have shown and are excited to see where this takes us in the future,” said RUHS band director Mark Aguero.

The victory qualified Redondo for the Southern California Schools Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) Championships, held last Saturday at Bellflower High School. Redondo finished 10 out of 12-band field.

The RUHS Dance Guard is directed by Sarah Slemmons. The band and dance guard are headed by drum major Tyler Salerno, assistant drum major Clay Attig, dance Guard co-captains Savannah Irving and Gianna Esposito guard assistant captain Erin Hardy and percussion captain Zac Commins. ER
